Alice Barker is a 102 year old woman who is seeing herself on film for the first time as a professional dancer and model during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930's. Her memories make her want to get up and do it all over again. "It don't mean a thing if it aint got that swing"

We are going through an extremely difficult time in our family at the moment. My youngest daughter, 22, was hit by a car while riding her push bike to work 5 weeks ago. She fractured her back, punctured the fluid sack around her spinal cord and suffered some minor injuries as well. I have been dedicating a great deal of my time to her, as you can imagine and next week, when released from hospital, she will be moving back into the family home. My Daughter is one of Nine children and it has been very important for me to take time to not only support her but also support the others while at the same time appreciating and sharing their every day experiences which are important to them. Our lives still contain laughter and I am finding that all siblings are now sharing stories from the past that seem to be rising into consciousness. We are very lucky to have my daughter still with us. This tragedy could have been much more devastating. The article below references small children and their siblings and although my children are all adults, I am noticing subtle similarities. I hope that if you find your self in a situation where your sibling or child is suffering from a long term illness of injury, that you might find some helpful information here.

Creative Warm Up Activity - As an Art Therapist I am often told by new clients that they are no good at art. I then share with them that Art Therapy is about the process of creativity , letting go of judgment and engagement with the moment, not the finished product. I sometimes use the process in this video with clients and at times vary it by both of us working on the same sheet of paper to build trust and have a bit of fun fun.

Innocent Child of The Village ( Free, non-political and non-religious event) Altona Beach, Melbourne, Australia

Image
https://www.facebook.com/events/406451209531857/ Children are societies most valuable gifts but sadly, 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys in Australia, have their innocence mutilated before the age of 16. In homage to those who have endured and survived, I will be offering my thoughts and dreams for all children and adult survivors who may need support from the community. I will also be offering empathy for those who have chosen to take their own lives. I will be at Altona Beach (at the right hand side of the Pier) at sunset to send positive wishes of support onto the wind, in the hope that my intentions might land where they are needed most. I invite you to join me. It is not compulsory but you may wish to bring a candle to light, a bell to ring, a song to sing, a movement to embody or an inner thought to express with your heart. This process will end once the sun has set. I will be there rain, hail or shine either on my own or with you and others

Recovery from trauma often results in facing difficult challenges on order to reach a sense of recovery. I have found mindfulness practice has enabled me to find joy in my every day experiences while undergoing life's challenges. Being present and appreciating the "Now" has helped me to not dwell in my past trauma but acknowledge it's affects on my life and turn them into positives in my present. I can't change the past but I can live a wondrous life today.

Excerpt from the Hero's Journey - Joseph Campbell The warrior’s approach is to say “yes” to life: “Yea” to it all. Participate joyfully in the sorrows of the world. We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy. When we talk about settling the world’s problems, We’re barking up the wrong tree. The world is perfect. It’s a mess. It has always been a mess. We are not going to change it. Our job is to straighten out our own lives. We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.
